In each country different rules apply for setting drug price. Basically, the pharmacy (retail) price of drug is made up of manufacturer/importer price, wholesaler price, pharmacy margins and VAT (Value Added Tax). In some countries price levels are only suggested, while in other countries maximal price levels are set by local regulations.
The price shown in DrugPrice is the best possible publicly available information that can be found for a country of interest. Different countries provide different levels of drug prices in their databases. For example Belgium or Bulgaria has published the drug prices only on manufacturer level. In such case the drug price displayed in DrugPrice can differ from the real drug price in pharmacy, as wholesaler and pharmacy margins and VAT must be added. If only wholesaler price level is published in local database, pharmacy margin + VAT must be added, as for example in Brasil. In the case if retail price incl. VAT is published in country database, the drug price displayed in DrugPrice is closest to the real price; nevertheless, in pharmacies still can be price adjustments and rebates.
